Thrissur

The term Thrissur is the abbreviated anglicized form of the Malayalam word "THRISSIVAPERUR" which means the town of the Sacred Siva.The town is built on an elevated ground, at the apex of which is the famous Vadakkumnadhan Temple. From ancient times, Thrissur District has played a significant part in the political history of south India.The early political history of the District is interlinked with that of the Cheras of the Sangam age, who ruled over vast portions of Kerala with their capital at Vanchi.

ATHIRAPILLY WATER FALLS (63 Kms from Thrissur) This 80" high waterfall at the threshold of the Sholayar ranges is a popular picnic spot. DreamWorld and SilverStorm - Amusement parks - are located nearby. DTPC has a unit to cater the needs of tourists.VAZHACHAL Just a short drive from Athirapilly is close to dense forests and a part of the Chalakudy river. punnathur kotta elephent sanctuary. Punathurkotta is very unique in being the largest elephant park in the world with over 60 elephants. All of them are donated by the devotees of Guruvayurappan. The elephant race and the feast for elephants are a few of the unique features. There are elephants of all ages including very small elephant to old onesSAKTHAN THAMPURAN PALACE Named as Vadakkekara Palace, was reconstructed in Kerala-Dutch style in 1795 by Sri.Ramavarma Thampuran of the erstwhile Princely State of Cochin, well as Sakthan Thampuran(Greatest ruler of the Cochin dynasty) is preserved by Archaeological Department.KUDAKKALLU (Umbrella Rock) of Chiramanangad have a history of over four thousand years, here people of aristocratic were cremated earthen ums and umbrella rocks were placed on top as land arks.VILANGANKUNNU has been converted by the tourism department as an amusement park. While grown ups relish the scenic splendor from the hill top. Children can relax and play to their hearts.PEECHI DAM Is a good picnic spot and located 20 kms. from Thrissur Town

GURUVAYUR SREE KRISHNA TEMPLE
Guruvayur, located in Chavkkad Taluk where the famous Sree Krishna Temple is situated, is one of the most sacred and important pilgrim centres of India. It is believed that Devaguru - Brahaspathi and Vayu Bhagavan in the presence of Parasurama adomed the idol at Guruvayur. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple.MUMMIYUR TEMPLE (1 Km away from Guruvayur) This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The visit to Guruvayur is not complete without a visit to Mammiyur. This Shiva temple is renowned for its wall paintings and exquisite sculpture. VADAKKUMNATHAN TEMPLE This temple is a classical example of Kerala style of architecture and has many decorative murals and works of art. This is the venue of the world famous Thrissur Pooram Festival celebrated annually in April-May. Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the temple

The major cultural attraction is the Thrissur Pooramfestival, celebrated during April - May, the Elephant Umbrella competition is spectacular, as richly caparisoned elephants carrying ceremonial umbrellas take the deity around the main temple. The passionate drum concerts and the spectacular firework displays are all part of the Pooram celebration
