Trivandrum - The capital of Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram is an ancient city with trading traditions dating back to 1000 BC. It is believed that the ships of King Solomon landed in a port called Ophir (now Poovar) in Thiruvananthapuram in 1036 BC The city was the trading post of spices, sandalwood and ivory. The rise of modern Thiruvananthapuram began with accession of Marthanda Varma in 1729 as the founding ruler of the princely state of TravancoreShree Padhmanabhaswamy templeOne of the Important Temple in Kerala is Shree Padhmanabhaswamy temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu is held sacred by the Hindus from antiquity.
Kovalam is 12kms to the south of Thiruvananthapuram and is one of the finest beaches in India. It has been developed into an integrated seaside resort. The beach complex has many hotels, cottages, yoga centres etc.
Vizhinjam About 2kms south of Kovalam, it is believed to be an ancient port. The Dutch and Portugese had commercial establishments here. It is being developed as a modern fishing harbour. Ponmudi A pleasant resort at an elevation of 912m above sea level. It is 61 kms from Thiruvananthapuram and connected by road. There are many tree and rubber estates around the hills. Veli lagoon The boat club attracts tourists by providing facilities for pedal boating , row boating , swimming on the placid waters of the veli lake.
The Kanakakunnu Palace. The palace and its sprawling grounds are today the venue for many cultural meets. The Museum building is an architectural splendour. Kanyakumari , the land's end of India is only 87kms from Trivandrum. Also known as Cape Comorin, this beautiful spot is in the neighbouring Tamilnadu state. Varkala is a pilgrim centre for the devotees of Sree Narayana Guru, one of the patron saints of Kerala, whose motto was "One God, One Religion, One Caste". It is only 51kms from Trivandrum by road and also boasts of one of the best beaches in the State
The city had well transportation facilities.Within the city, city buses and auto rickshaws provide means of transportation. The intra-city public transport is dominated by the state-owned KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation). There are also private bus services, but are limited in number. The city services of KSRTC operate from six depots namely, the City depot, Vikas Bhavan, Peroorkada, Pappanamcode, Kaniyapuram and Vellanad..The Central railway station is also located at Thampanoor in the heart of the city, 8 km from the airportIt is a very important terminus which handles over 50 trains daily.
Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, Air Deccan, Kingfisher Airlines and Paramount Airways are the domestic airlines operating from here. Air India, Air-India Expres, Gulf Air, Oman Air, Kuwait Airways, Silk Air, Etihad, Srilankan Airlines, Qatar Airways, Air Arabia and Emirates operate international flights
