Kerala - Backwaters and Beaches
By Hansa Makhijani

A vacation exploring Kerala backwaters and beaches leaves you asking for more. Much more. For such is the glory of Kerala, rightfully called God’s Own Country, Kerala has a long and verdant coastline and is home to several beaches and backwaters. Backwaters are unique to Kerala and comprise of a group of several manmade and natural canals, over 35 rivers and 5 big lakes. These can be explored by hiring a boat or a lavish houseboat that comes loaded with a cook and a navigator at your service.

Most people who embark on a Kerala backwaters holiday experience an air of tranquility that does wonders to their spirits. The placid waters cast a spell on visitors and locals alike. These backwaters can be found meandering their way through almost all regions of Kerala. Kerala backwater destinations that must not be missed are Ernakulam, Thiruvallam, Kumarakom and Kuttanad. There are a number of islands on the Vemabanad and Ashtamudi Lakes that are a pleasure to explore. While reveling in the serenity of the backwaters of Kerala one also discovers the best way to explore its rich mangroves.

The glistening beaches of Kerala are also picture perfect. They make for serene walks and calming conversations. One can also indulge in a plethora of water sports activities and beach bumming here. The sandy beaches of Kovalam are simply not to be missed. They are among the few beaches in the world to have partially black sands. This is because of the minerals ilmenite and thorazitein present in the soil. Other Kerala beaches of note are Kozhikode Beach, Varkala Beach, Thirumullavaram Beach, and Cherai Beach.

For those who seek solitude and seclusion, the Payyambalam and the Kappil beaches are the best bet. Pick seashells, build sand castles, enjoy coconut water, or relax on the Kerala backwaters and beaches. A visit to this gorgeous tropical paradise in southern India is absolutely worth every penny.
